Understanding Spiritual Warfare and Health

Glacier National Park, Montana, USA

When my boys were younger, they had multiple health issues. We saw many doctors and specialists, and I was determined to seek out each new referral or treatment recommendation in an attempt to learn everything I could to understand and manage their health. I was desperate to help them, and it consumed my mind, emotions, time, finances—every area of my life—for many years.

When the stress of it all started to affect my own health, I cried out to God. I told Him I knew I could not control any of it and asked Him to direct their health journey, to open and close doors, and to lead us to who He had for us. Certain practitioners were part of the journey for a time and for a purpose in my growth, learning, and discernment process, but whenever God closed a door, I had peace and trusted that He would guide us in the next step.

I was still focused on the physical root cause of their symptoms and more natural treatment approaches, but I learned to ask God if what the doctor recommended was okay for us to do. I did not understand to ask about any spiritual aspect of their health issues until a friend started teaching me. She pointed out the spiritual connection to physical ailments in Scripture, and at first, I couldn’t separate the proof of what we knew we were dealing with—from lab results—from what she was sharing with me.

God then taught me about different levels of the spiritual realm through one of my boys experiencing night terrors, and I knew we were in a spiritual battle. The Holy Spirit, along with my friend and other trusted believers, guided me on how to take authority in Jesus’ name over the spirits attacking my son in the night. Thankfully, he didn’t remember any of the episodes the next day, which was God’s mercy during my learning process.

I taught my boys everything I was learning so they would know how to take their thoughts captive, recognize and rebuke lies from the enemy, take authority over deceiving spirits in the name of Jesus, examine their lives and remove anything that wasn’t pleasing to God, and understand the importance of repentance and obedience to God’s Word in order to be set free and STAY FREE.

It was an intense learning process for all of us, and we went through many tests and trials with both boys to see if we would stand strong. But when they started applying what they learned, the physical symptoms began to decrease.

Praise God, they no longer deal with any of the health issues they used to. God allowed this for our growth and learning, but also so we could share it with others. To anyone reading this, I am happy to talk and answer any questions you may have.
